Austin Songer is running for Congress because he believes in a new vision of representation for the 6th Congressional District of Illinois. He's running to give the people of the 6th District a real choice in 2018.
Austin's opponent is a 10-year incumbent Republican who has wholeheartedly backed the Trump agenda. He publicly supports the privatization of education through a voucher system, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and implementing a border adjustment tax on imported products to pay for a border wall with Mexico. Illinois 6th District deserves better than Rep. Peter Roskam. Our district is full of good, decent people. We are warm and compassionate. We care about our families, our communities, and the environment. We believe in science. We abhor discrimination. We cherish and support all our neighbors, from the young to the elderly.
Austin knows that these policies will hurt his constituents and the American people. Unlike his opponent, he is committed to listening to his constituents' stories, learning what makes our communities thrive, and leading the Illinois 6th Congressional District with a shared and unified vision.
Does Rep. Peter Roskam speak for you? Will you reelect a man who shows callous disregard for the health and well-being of his own constituents? Will you re-elect a man who thinks insurance companies shouldn't have to cover constituents with pre-existing conditions? Or will you stand up for our district's values and priorities and vote for change in 2018?
The road ahead is daunting, and our odds are long. Roskam typically wins re-election without even breaking a sweat. But this year is different. We are going to organize early and fundraise mightily. We are going to force Roskam to answer hard questions, politely but firmly demanding that he be held accountable for his positions, his words, and his actions. We are going to show that Roskam does not represent the true face of this district. We can do better. And we will.
We invite all our district's Democrats, moderate Republicans, and unaffiliated voters to join me in this campaign. We look forward to uniting the many voters who are dissatisfied with Roskam, including small business owners, retirees, health care professionals, teachers and educators, young people, and women. Austin can't promise that he will always be able to satisfy everyone, but Austin will listen with an open mind, and Austin will use evidence-based reasoning to make policy decisions.
